Polypropylene is a thermoplastic polymer created through polymerization of propene (a hydrocarbon). These granules are melted via extrusion, pressed through a plate and turned into filaments.
For multifilaments, the mass is extruded through a fine showerhead as it were, which produces fine filaments. For split film, a film is extruded. This film is then split or cut into slices, stretched, heated, fibrillated, … and this produces the net structure.
These fibers are then processed into staple spun or braided rope.
