From January 1, 2023, we will deliver our rope and chain accessories packaged in 100% recycled and recyclable PE bags. Inspired by our corporate vision of 'local production and sustainability', we are always looking for improvements. For example, we are moving away from our current blister packaging for rope and chain accessories. With this we offer our customers a locally produced more sustainable product.
Locally produced more sustainable product
Corbeo has been working for several years on a strategy of 're-shoring', whereby local production is systematically expanded. The rope and chain accessories are now purchased in bulk and packaged in Zele by machine. By moving the packaging activity to Belgium, we again become less dependent on import flows and we can respond more flexibly to market developments. Moreover, this change is also based on an important sustainability impact:
- CO2 reduction: sourcing the accessories in bulk ensures that many more items fit in one transport. As a result, we reduce the number of container shipments by 70% and save 3.925 kg of CO2 per year. In addition, the packaged items in a bag take up to 6x less space than the blisters. Everything can be packed more compactly for distribution to the retail stores. This transportation optimization also results in CO2
- Production via solar panels: the packaging activity takes place in a nearly energy neutral building in Belgium.
- Strongly improved recyclability by avoiding multiple packaging components: hard plastic, cardboard card and staple have been replaced by one waste stream, a recyclable soft monoplastic.
Rope and chain accessories in the store
On the Belgian market, under our Ledent brand, we have quite a few setups of rope and chain accessories in DIY stores. Replacing the blister packs with 100% recyclable PE bags will give these stores a more sustainable look. The product information on the front and back supports sales. Various color codes visually indicate the difference in material: galvanized or stainless steel. In addition, the bags take up less volume, so that more bags fit on a hook.
