Abaca is a banana plant and therefore a larger, more robust plant. The fibers come from the stalk of the plant.

Technical details

  • 3 or 4 strand staple spun/twisted rope
  • Moderate tensile strength, stronger than sisal
  • Absorbs moisture, but does not harden
  • Good moisture resistance. May eventually rot, but contains 10% oil to prevent rotting
  • When pulled, stretches somewhat before breaking
  • UV resistant
  • Fire retardant
  • Natural coloring (dark brown)
