Polypropylene is a thermoplastic polymer created through polymerization of propene (a hydrocarbon). These granules are melted via extrusion, pressed through a plate and turned into filaments.

For multifilaments, the mass is extruded through a fine showerhead as it were, which produces fine filaments. For split film, a film is extruded. This film is then split or cut into slices, stretched, heated, fibrillated, … and this produces the net structure.

These fibers are then processed into staple spun or braided rope.

Polypropyleen

Split film

Properties

  • Synthetic rope, not biodegradable
  • Strong, lightweight rope
  • Rather stiff, not very flexible
  • Floats

Applications

  • All-round use

Technical details

  • 3 or 4 strand twisted, or one/two/three/four strand string
  • High tensile strength
  • Vulnerable to wear and tear
  • Moderate elasticity
  • Does not absorb moisture, does not rot, floats (density of 0.91 g/cm³)
  • The least UV resistant synthetic rope, weakens after UV exposure (unless stabilized, which we do as standard)
  • Heat resistant: melts from 165°C
  • Resistant to acids and bases
  • Various colors, usually orange twisted rope or white string

Multifilament

Properties

  • Synthetic string, not biodegradable
  • Strong, light rope
  • Supple and soft
  • Easy to knot

Applications

  • All-round use
  • Skipping ropes
  • Dog leads
  • Decoration

Technical details

  • 3 strand twisted or 12 strand (2mm)/16 strand /40 strand (10 and 12mm mixed colors) braided
  • High tensile strength
  • Vulnerable to wear and tear
  • Minimal elasticity (± 5%)
  • Does not absorb moisture or rot, floats (density 0.91 g/cm³)
  • The least UV resistant synthetic rope, weakens after UV exposure (unless stabilized, which we do as standard)
  • Heat resistant: melts from 165°C
  • Resistant to acids and bases
  • Blue or black twisted, and white or mixed colors for braided multifilament polypropylene
